News of a Halloween Whopper with a black bun shook the internet in a way we’re only used to from Taco Bell.  While black buns are somewhat common in Japan, this is uncharted territory in U.S. markets.  Fast Food Geeks like us began counting down the days until the release, and that day is finally here.

At first, I thought the Halloween Whopper had a black bun just from food coloring.  While that is almost certainly still the case, I was intrigued to see Burger King attribute this color to the presence of the popular A1 Steak sauce being baked in.  This pulled back the needle a bit from “full blown gimmick” to “mostly gimmick”.  As you can see from the ingredient list below, with the exception of the A1 sauce and black bun, the Halloween Whopper is just a standard whopper.

First Impressions

To answer the first question you might have, “Yes, I did laugh while eating this burger; more than once actually.”  When I first unwrapped the festive mummy themed wrapper, I couldn’t help but laugh, and then again when attempting to take my first bite.  The black bun is just so bizarre to look at.

The first thing I did was test the claim that A.1. Flavor had been baked into my bun.  I did the unthinkable and ate a quarter of the bun with no burger.  If I really strained my senses, I think I picked up a bit of smokiness.  If I were blindfolded–which is my recommendation for eating this burger–I may not have noticed at all.  The other distinguishing component is the A.1. Thick and Hearty Sauce.  I found the sauce to be neither.  It was very thin, more like a glaze.  I actually searched the interior of my burger to verify that what I had found was indeed the sauce.

A1 Halloween Whopper – The Verdict

We all knew going in that this thing was a gimmick with a capital G.  I held out some hope that it would be a more flavorful gimmick at least.  In the end, we really have a whopper with a funny bun.  I’m happy about it, I felt like I was having fun or something, but still just a whopper.  I would have liked to see some thick A.1. sauce, and even more pronounced flavor in the bun.  To answer your final question, sadly, No, it did not turn my mouth black.

**Some people have reported that the Halloween Whopper’s black bun has caused an issue with bright green poop.  Let us know below if you’ve experienced this as well**

(Side note, I somehow didn’t notice this before, but apparently BK stylizes this as the HA.1LOWEEN WHOPPER…I guess I get it now…)
