While the Pumpkin Spice and the rest of the Autumn time flavors begin to fade into the dark distance, Winter flavors are here just in time for November. While Winter is a true sludge fest for most of us, there are some comforting foods and flavors out there that do make this time of the year livable. Hot Chocolate or hot cocoa has long been a nostalgic beverage for most of us. Nothing hit the spot better after a long session of sled riding during a snow day than a steaming cup of hot cocoa loaded up with mini mallows. The Hot Cocoa Chips Ahoy Cookie is now trying to recreate this experience in cookie form.
Ingredients
- Chocolate cookie base
- Hot cocoa filling
- Chocolate chips
- Marshmallow flavored chips
While these cookies don’t come with a detailed description on the package, these are part of Chips Ahoy’s filled cookie line. With a chocolate cookie base, they are stuffed with hot cocoa filling, and have both chocolate and marshmallow flavored chips on top. The package instructs all to “Heat for a Treat” to further bring along the hot chocolate atmosphere. Nothing says comfort and cozy like an ooey gooey cookie, moist as the day is long, melting in your mouth after trudging through the snow.
While the instructions say to heat 2 cookies on a napkin for “6 or 7 seconds” and to be careful not to overheat the cookies, I found that 6 or 7 seconds comes up a bit short. My duo of cookies came out only lukewarm and didn’t even get soft. While I can’t guarantee it, 10 seconds seems like the right time frame to me for these. Regardless of heat these cookies are very solid. While it’s really hard to differentiate the taste between hot chocolate and chocolate, the stuffed filling did have some sort of essence of difference. That borderline watery, foamy hot chocolate taste is hard to chemically replicate but I feel like Chips Ahoy did at least a “B” level job. I think I would have liked it better if they would have just cut out the chocolate chips on top and doubled up on the marshmallow chips because they’re hardly noticeable with all of the chocolate surrounding it.
Hot Cocoa Chips Ahoy – The Verdict
In the end, these Hot Cocoa Chips Ahoy are a decent find, that will pair great with an actual mug of hot chocolate during these cold days ahead.
